Some Benefits:

Trees provide shade and shelter to people and animals

Trees spaced across paddocks provide pathways to enable gliders to move between otherwise isolated pockets of vegetation

Trees provide shelter to birds moving across open spaces

Funding is available to provide trees and material for protective surround. You would need to provide the labour to plant the trees and the long term care.

This offer is provided by Tully Wildlife Preservation Society of Qld. in conjunction with the Cassowary Coast Council.

The recent Select Carbon workshop was well attended by a range of interested foresters…from Elders , Forestry Plantations Queensland, DAFF,Timber Qld , Ergon, Terrain and private individuals.

Its aim was to workshop the draft ‘Best Practice Guide for Timber Plantations in Cyclonic Areas of Qld’ and the Forestry element of ‘Land Management to minimise impacts on the reef’ for the rural Reef Guardian programme.

Both of these documents are ground breaking in that they attempt to assess and recommend practices following the multiple impacts of Cyclone Yasi. It was a very interesting day and a good opportunity to network. There was also an interesting report from DEEDI as they wrap up their research sites before moving to Gympie.

The following links were used in the draft: https://www.timberqueensland.com.au/, https://www.noaa.gov.us/, https://www.greeningaustralia.org.au/.

It will be worth having another discussion when these documents are finalised and really look at the environmental implications.
