CASSOWARY COAST-HINCHINBROOK BRANCH WPSQ NUMBER 4

CASSOWARY COAST-HINCHINBROOK BRANCH WPSQ

NEWS BULLETIN JULY 2014

FUNDING BOOST

We have beenAGS_logo pleasantly surprised by the results of last year’s fund raiser offer by Australian Geographic for the Mahogany Glider. It took a while to arrive but there were no complaints when $21,000.00 was put into our account. This will help enormously to pay for signage at the revegetation sites, some fencing at the Glenbora site and maintenance costs. In our letter of appreciation we offered to include Australian Geographic’s logo in our signage.

MAHOGANY GLIDER RECOVERY GROUP

The July meeting of the group concentrated mostly on the review of the Recovery Plan undertaken by Steve Jackson which will produce a much more detailed and comprehensive action plan. One special feature of the meeting was the presence of two representatives from the Main Roads Department (Tvlle) who were pressed to improve road signage and look into the need for crossing poles at Damper Creek reveg site and Kennedy Creek Rd. Also discussed was the Draft Planning Scheme of Cassowary Coast Regional Council. Daryl’s place on the Back On Track working group has secured the Glider as a key species which will increase chances of funding for mapping etc.

LOBBYING

Daryl attended a Terrain sponsored workshop on the Draft Planning Scheme, Cassowary Coast Regional Council, which made the submission sent from the branch much more targeted and hopefully more effective. A submission was also sent from the Mahogany Glider Recovery team. The new Commissioner of Threatened Species , Gregory Andrews has worked with Steve Jackson and is promising for the Glider.

SPEAKERS

So many inspirational speakers at the Ninney Rise Conference; from our branch,

Margaret Thorsborne AO shared her history of the battle for the reef – as always an inspirational speaker. Suzie Smith spoke eloquently and with passion about the heritage listing of the Ninney Rise and its history. Carol Muller also gave an interesting and informative talk about WPSQ’s history in the fight for the reef. Daryl spoke about art and conservation.

DISPLAYS

Despite the inclement weather and lack of company, Anne and Lawrie did a great display at the Sustainability Expo in Innisfail at the start of June.

Judy , John and Carol Muller and Daryl did a great job with the display at the Reef and Rainforest Conservation Stories conference at Ninney Rise at the start of July. Head Office had sent us three boxes of materials for use at displays.

Please make some time available to help out at the Tully Show display, Friday 25th  and Saturday 26th. This has to be manned so needs a good response from members to sit for a while as well as set up and pack up.
